Know Fear (Courage) with Brad Axelrad

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

Most of you have probably heard these famous words by Franklin Deleno Roosevelt. And you probably recite them from memory with that special FDR flair. However, do you know the rest of the quote? For some reason, it seems to have been cast aside over the years.

“So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”

Last week on Where There’s Smoke, we talked about success. We quoted Thoreau, who said that you must “advance confidently in the direction of your dreams.” And while there are many obstacles that might derail us on our journey to success, there is perhaps none more devious than the “nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror” called fear.

At any given moment, with any given choice, at any given crossroads – fear is often the greatest influencer in whether we advance or retreat. And in that moment of decision, fear can feel like it is everywhere.

This week on Where There’s Smoke, we enlist a slew of help from a myriad of places to try and better understand fear:

  • FDR
  • Monty Python
  • Consultant and Speaker, Brad Axelrad
  • Wikipedia
  • Fiction writer, Karen Thompson
  • Astronaut, Chris Hadfield
  • Psychologist, Paul Slovic
  • Rocky Balboa
  • Dictionary Merriam-Webster
  • Movie, We Bought A Zoo

Our hope is that maybe we can lessen the power that fear can hold over us and be more aware of when it’s our friend, and when it’s our foe.
