To Act or To Action (Allyship)

This week, as the world continues to reckon with race and equality after the murder of George Floyd, we try to understand what an ally IS… and what it isn’t.

Brett and Nick both hold up a mirror to look at their own actions (or lack of them). And Nick has a conversation with Holliday Philips, who recently published the article ‘Performative Allyship Is Deadly (Here’s What to Do Instead)’.

Read the article here:

Reminder for our FUNDRAISER FOR JUSTICE:

As a way to support the work of those who are fighting for the rights of Black Americans, we wanted to find a way to encourage more giving during this critical time.

Since our last episode explored Nick’s relationship with pencils, we realized that we could encourage our listeners to seek out their own pencil experiences AND support this important cause.

What do I get?

These are brand new, nice pencils from Nick’s personal stock. They have brought him joy and hopefully they can bring you some, too.

What kind of pencils?

Each package of four pencils will be different, but packages will include some assortment of Blackwings (including Volumes editions), Musgraves (including the Tennessee Red), some Japanese brands and some other fun pencils. Also, Nick will write you a little note about your pencils!

Alright. I’m in. How do I get my pencils?

1) Choose an organization from the list below

Equal Justice Initiative

Know Your Rights Camp

National Bail Out

Reclaim the Block

Southern Poverty Law Center

2) Make a Donatation

For a $25 donation, Nick will send you a package containing four different pencils to write, journal, sketch, put behind your ear… whatever! (Each box will be different.)

For a $40+ donation, Nick will send you a package containing six different pencils. For the first 8 people who donate, you’ll receive a super limited edition Blackwing #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd pencil (it sold out within hours) AND a Blackwing Volume 1 (that is Nick’s favorite pencil). If the #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd pencil is sold out, you’ll still receive a Blackwing Vol. 1 and some other fun pencil.

3) Take a screenshot of the donation and email it to connect@wheretheressmoke.co.
4) Make sure to include a shipping address
5) Optional: Include a description of what you might want to use your new pencils for. That might help shape what pencils you receive!

Fundraiser goes until June 23rd (or until there are simply no more pencils!).
